Faith and Acts

Vicomte D’Hendecourt, former President-General of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Circular Letter of December 12, 1915:

“The Society has two aims: to do a great deal of spiritual good to its members through the exercise of charity, and to do a little spiritual and temporal good to a few poor families in the name of Jesus Christ. If it did not continually seek to combine these two aims, it would lose its reason for being. If it were to seek only the holiness of its members through pious exercises, there is no lack of Confraternities and Third Orders to meet that need. If, on the other hand, it were to seek only the relief of the temporal miseries of the poor, it would only add one more to the list of public and private institutions founded for that purpose.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the “purpose” of SVDP?

A: The purpose of the Society has been described as two-fold: 1) to help its members to grow spiritually, through modeling the actions of Christ Jesus in direct service to the poor and others in need and (2) to attempt to ease the suffering of those in need.

Q: Do I have to be a member of OLG parish to join the OLG Conference?

A: While we encourage interested parishioners to join us, all are welcome to participate as affiliate members. Non-Catholics may join us, too, with the understanding that SVDP is a Catholic lay organization. Also, food and money donations are always welcome.

Q: How can someone in our parish contact SVDP for help?

A: Persons in need in the OLG Parish or in the greater community should call our help line, (916) 371-5264.
